Didsbury is full of fantastic places to eat; my greedy sister and I have greatly enjoyed nibbling our way through many of them. So when Didsbury Lounge opened recently I was keen to see how it fared compared to the tasty competition. A leisurely Saturday afternoon seemed like the perfect opportunity to graze from one of their signature Smorgasbord-style platters.
The extensive menu with a tempting variety of meat, fish and vegetarian options had us studying for a good 15 minutes, but we finally managed to decide on a mere (!) 8 dishes between two of us. These included: trio of burgers, mackerel pate, risotto balls, squash & cheese parcels, aubergine dip, mixed olive salad, falafel and homemade fries.
While we waited for the chefs to prepare our feast we admired the restaurant’s interesting decor and enjoyed a spot of people-watching, with the busy pavements of Barlow Moor Road perfectly framed by Didsbury Lounge’s open-plan bar/terrace area.
But our attention rapidly turned back to the table when our delicious Smorgasbord arrived, brimming with bite-sized dishes that looked even more tempting than they had on the menu. It would be impossible to pick a favourite (my indecision when it comes to food explains why the platter was such a tempting solution in the first place), but highlights were the crispy risotto balls, oozing with melted cheese, and the tasty olive salad with its delicious hidden nuggets of artichokes.
The portions were generous but not over-facing and, in no hurry to leave the restaurant’s contemporary yet cosy setting, we eventually finished everything on the board. Didsbury Lounge is fantastic value and, with equally tempting breakfast and dinner menus, I’m sure I’ll be back soon.
