Today I spent an enjoyable morning browsing the delis of Harrogate’s Kings Road.
First stop was the French, family run Le Gourmet. I was looking for something to offer my vegetarian friends later that evening and was not dissappointed. Owner Michel Mingam and his son Ben made us a roast vegetable tart which was baked that morning and ready to collect prior to our guests’ arrival.
I then faced the difficult decision of what to choose for pudding. I was tempted by the apple tart with calvados, and the clafoutis was also calling, but in the end I went with the cheesecake. Piled high with fresh fruits it was a visual feast and the taste was even better! Our guests commented that they could not image a more perfect dessert – high praise indeed.
I couldn’t leave the deli without trying one of their hot croissants filled with ham and oozing gruyere cheese. Fully re-fuelled I was ready to move onto my next stop…
Just a few paces further along Kings Road is the equally friendly Arcimboldo’s. Here I picked up colourful salads to go with the tart and pizza-topped baguettes for a quick lunch. The food is displayed in such a way that it makes you want to try everthing. Shelves are stacked high with oils, vinegars and Italian specialities, along with fresh coffee and Rococco chocolates. Their artisan breads would be perfect with one of the local cheeses and cold meats from the counter.
As well as offering plenty of choice for entertaining, both delis are also good for quick after-work suppers. Offering home cooked food they will even fill your own dishes, a service I fully intend to make use of!
