The trendy Salford suburb of Monton has seen a number of new bars and restaurants opening lately, but Blacksticks is a longstanding favourite with locals. And it’s now a GS favourite too! This modern European restaurant is on Monton high street and its bifold windows are often flung wide open, revealing a contemporary interior that’s constantly full of diners. The main menu is very varied, offering small plates, grilled dishes and traditional main courses, but we’ve always found plenty of choice on the early bird menu, which is also available all day on Sundays.
On a recent visit to Blacksticks I started with a tasty salmon fishcake, served on pickled beetroot with chive creme fraiche. The light tempura coating on the fishcake was deliciously crispy, hiding plenty of lemony salmon on the inside. For my main course I had pan fried seabass on vegetable ratatouille and red pepper coulis, topped with a creamy feta and mint pesto. It was so full of flavour that I ordered the exact same dish when I returned to Blacksticks a week later.
The greedy family all sampled Blacksticks Sunday roast, which looked equally appealing – unfortunately they all tucked in too quickly for me to take a picture, but there’s always next time! We were too full for desserts but I’m sure I’ll be back again to sample all three courses. At £14 for two courses and £17 for three courses, Blacksticks is fantastic value and a reliable neighbourhood restaurant with great service to match.
